Frequently Asked Questions About Rolfing®
What is Rolfing®?
Rolfing® Structural Integration is a bodywork modality that doesn’t “chase pain,” however, it seeks to reorganize the fascial network of the body. As the alignment of the body improves and there are less restrictions, clients can experience relief from chronic pain, feel more connected in their body, and find they have more energy in their day to day life!
What to expect in my first session?
Come wearing clothes you’re comfortable in (shorts & a tank top/ bra for women, shorts/boxers for men), please no thick or ribbed materials (jeans, corduroy etc). We will begin by going over your intake form and I can answer any questions that you may have. Then we will do a few movements together to get a “base line” on how the body feels and is functioning. Then we will do the hands-on (Rolfing® technique) work on the massage table, I may have you moving while I work in a certain area. Most clients are awake during Rolfing® sessions and share when they feel a restriction moving or a connected area somewhere else in the body (working on the shoulder, but client feels it referring to the opposite hip). Then we will retest the same movements that we started with and see how the body feels and what changes may have occurred.
What to expect after my session?
Look for what “feels good” in the body, it’s important to prime our bodies for the positive changes and note if chronic pain hasn’t been alleviated- but maybe it’s lessened, or it’s moved to another part of the body (this is very common with Rolfing® & is considered a good thing!). As patterns begin to unwind in the body, sensations move around and change.
I like to send a follow email with movement ideas to try that may be supportive for you & your body goals. It takes 5-7 days for a Rolfing® session to settle in.
It’s important to note that there are no quick fixes. Change in the body happens over time and with your awareness of habitual patterns and learning to shift alignment that is within your power - long-lasting shifts can occur!
